Histology Technician
Summary
Under general supervision, the Histology Technician prepares microscopic tissue slides for diagnostic/research purposes; performs tissue stains to assist in diagnosis; handles specimen accessioning; maintains laboratory and equipment. This position performs technical work that is essential for clinical diagnosis by the pathologist.

- Load and program tissue processor following established procedures.
- Prepares microscopic tissue slides for diagnostic/research purposes; performs tissue stains to assist in diagnosis.
- Handles specimen accessioning.
- Perform preventative maintenance on microtomes, automatic stainer, cover slipper and other equipment as specified.
- Processes Necropsy specimens.
- Monitors chemical inventory.
- Clean and restock tissue processor and stainer weekly.
- Performing basic special stains.
Education and Experience
Associate’s degree in a biological science or completion of a NAACLS accredited Histology program and one year of laboratory experience.

None
Supervision
Received: Detailed and precise supervision from clinicians, supervisors or higher ranking technicians. Instructions are both written and oral. Minimal supervision is required but supervisor is normally available for advice and consultation.
Exercised: May provide general instruction and guidance to students, technicians and clinicians as required in the submission of lab samples.
