Animal Care Facilities Engineer II

Summary

Responsible for all ACS (Animal Care Services) facilities with regard to building maintenance and equipment. Reviews construction plans, oversees staff maintenance training manages various department maintenance systems, and surveys facilities for needed maintenance. Performs equipment/systems preventative maintenance, equipment/systems trouble shooting, and repair on a semi-regular basis. Manages small construction projects within laboratory animal facilities. Responds to after-hours emergencies. May be assigned to on-call shifts.

  • Performs duties of Facilities Engineer 1.
  • Reviews construction/renovation plans for laboratory animal facilities.
  • Requires working knowledge of building automation systems and databases.
  • Oversees staff training in equipment operation as well as operator level and maintenance level equipment maintenance.
  • Manages an automated departmental maintenance request and tracking system.
  • Coordinates Physical Plant Department (PPD) operations within laboratory animal facilities to increase response time and minimize impact on the facility.
  • Oversees an automated maintenance request and tracking system.
    Oversees numerous maintenance contracts for facility equipment.
    Acts as the Facilities Engineer 3 in their absence.
    Surveys assigned facilities for facility issues requiring maintenance support.
    Manages small construction projects within laboratory animal facilities.
    May travel to manufacturing plants for equipment site acceptance prior to delivery.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of relevant experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred qualifications
Knowledge of equipment and facilities used in lab animal research. Prefer experience with Animal Biological Safety Level 3 facilities and construction projects. Prefer controls and security system experience. American Association for Laboratory Animal Science certification preferred. Experience with SharePoint and Microsoft Office suite software preferred. Need excellent communication skills, verbal and written, with ability to work in a teamwork environment with peers, researchers, vendors, trades personnel, and UF staff. Prefer HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and controls experience. Prefer experience with facilities and construction project planning.

Licensure and Certification

FL Incinerator Operator certification within 12 months of hire.
UF Supervisory Challenge completed within 18 months of hire.
A valid state driver’s license.
