Hazardous Materials Specialist III

Summary

The Hazardous Materials Specialist III serves as an integral assistant to both the Hazardous Materials Management Program Manager and the Hazardous Materials Management Program Coordinator. This role is responsible for ensuring facility compliance through consistent inspections, waste process audits, oversight of shipments, and oversight of permit compliance.

  • Responsible for maintaining facility compliance, under the supervision of the Hazardous Materials Coordinator and/or Program Manager, by conducting routine inspections, process audits, and providing essential staff training to promote adherence to regulations.
  • Assists in the preparation and recordkeeping of hazardous waste shipments.
  • Performs process audits to improve waste determination and management processes and to identify opportunities for waste minimization.
  • Assists in the daily operation and management of the Hazardous Materials Management Program and of the Hazardous Waste Management Facility.  Acts as secondary Emergency Coordinator for the Hazardous Waste Management Facility and responds to campus hazardous material emergencies during and after regular work hours.
  • Acts as the secondary Emergency Coordinator for the Hazardous Waste Management Facility. Respond to campus hazardous material emergencies, both during and after regular working hours.
  • Collects and analyzes data as appropriate; tracks and compiles waste management data for reporting and review purposes; conducts chemical waste sampling and procures analysis for purposes of waste determination.
  • Operates UF/state vehicles responsibly as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the unit Coordinator and/or Manager.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and four (4) years of continually responsible experience in Hazardous Waste Management. Appropriate college coursework may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
