Production Associate II

Summary

This position is responsible for the manufacturing of all new and reprinted books in offset, digital, and print-on-demand formats, as well as the preparation and delivery of printer-ready files to ebook conversion providers.

Examples of Work

  • Oversees and coordinates offset and digital printing of all new and reprinted books as well as the selection of prepress, printing, binding, supply, shipping, and other vendors.
  • Consults with various stakeholders in order to choose stocks and materials that are suitable for publication goals while being cost effective.
  • Oversees and coordinates the creation and conversion of all ebooks, including ePub and ePDF formats throughout multiple rounds of quality assurance and corrections.
  • Prepares and converts files for ebook development, including the cleanup of XML, adding semantic tagging of content for accessibility, optimizing images and other embedded media, and setting up file metadata.
  • Coordinates with other members of the metadata and distribution team to ensure timely distribution of ebook files to retailers.
  • Manages and implements post-publication corrections to existing ebook files and keeps published and archival versions up to date.
  • Assists in maintaining detailed production schedules and project status charts to achieve publication deadlines.
  • Monitors changes in specifications and vendor cost calculators, as well as new developments in prepress, printing, binding and shipping methods and systems, accessibility, and sustainability initiatives and makes decisions regarding implementation.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and a minimum of two years’ experience in book production. Skills include familiarity with word processing; desktop publishing technology, specifically Adobe Creative Suite; and current print, binding and prepress technologies.

Supervision

Provides supervision and training to OPS and student assistant positions.
