Veterinary Perfusionist

Summary

Veterinary Perfusionists lead all aspects of providing perfusion support for patients undergoing open-heart surgery at the Small Animal Hospital. Responsible for developing a perfusion training program to facilitate programmatic growth and knowledge dissemination

Job functions are specific duties that would be included in the essential functions of the job description. These functions are not all-inclusive nor do they cover the full extent of the duties performed.

  • Provide perfusion support for patients undergoing open-heart surgery at the Small Animal Hospital.
  • Operate a heart/lung machine and other ancillary support equipment.
  • Administer blood, blood products, anesthetics and drugs through the extracorporeal circuit.
  • Provide follow-up care as necessary.
  • Source needed disposable equipment for circuitry and perfusion.
  • Communicate with anesthesiologists, cardiologists, surgeons, operating room nurses and ICU nurses for the care of patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass / perfusion.
  • Develop a training program and train veterinarians in the skill of perfusion through an organized fellowship for veterinarians who have completed specialty training in either cardiology, anesthesia, or critical care.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s of science in perfusion, or a bachelor’s degree and completion of a perfusion training program.

Licensure and Certification

Perfusion training certification is required.

Supervision

This position is expected to supervise perfusion fellows.
