Veterinary Technician Assistant Manager

Summary

The Veterinary Technician Assistant Manager (VTAM) supports the coordination of veterinary services under the guidance of the Veterinary Technician Manager (VTM). This role involves managing staff assignments, scheduling, and facilitating training and evaluations for all veterinary technician levels. The VTAM assists in coordinating clinical care, diagnostic services, surgical monitoring, and post-surgical care, including special services and protocol support. Additionally, they contribute to teaching and training classes for staff, UF research labs, and external research studies. Responsibilities include ensuring accurate health records and overseeing the management and training of veterinary care technicians to support research partners’ animal colonies.

  • Conducts interviews and provides input for hiring applicants.
  • Maintains area schedules, purchases equipment and supplies, and ensures timely billing for services.
  • Directly supervises assigned staff, coordinating all aspects of veterinary care technician activities.
  • Assigns veterinary care technician staff as needed to maintain and develop health-monitoring schedules and diagnostic sample collection.
  • Develops and implements procedures for managing operating rooms, offices, treatment spaces, rodent surgical areas, clinical inventory, and equipment.
  • Provides oversight of veterinary care technician clinical services.
  • Coordinates and administers treatment to laboratory animals as prescribed by clinical veterinarians.
  • Initiates and supervises veterinary nursing methods, including injections, oral medications, suture removal, dressing wounds, and routine veterinary medical procedures.

Education and Experience

Degree from an accredited veterinary technology program; or an associate’s degree and four years of experience as a veterinary technician, including work with research animals.

Licensure and Certification

Credentialed veterinary technician (CVT/LVT/RVT) or CVPM preferred.

Supervision

Provides general supervision and oversight of employees, other personnel services, students, volunteers, and support staff. Instructions are both written and oral.
