Summary
The Museum Exhibit Preparator serves as the technical lead for exhibit fabrication and installation at the Florida Museum of Natural History. This position independently plans, coordinates, and executes exhibit projects, applying advanced museum preparation practices to the construction, mounting, handling, and care of exhibit components and objects. The role collaborates with curators, designers, registrars, and facilities staff to translate exhibit concepts into fully realized installations. The Preparator exercises discretion and independent judgment in selecting materials, fabrication methods, and installation approaches, and provides project level oversight while directing the work of interns, volunteers, and OPS staff.

• Independently plans, schedules, and coordinates the installation and deinstallation of permanent and temporary museum exhibits, ensuring adherence to museum standards for safety, object care, and visitor experience.
• Serves as the technical lead for exhibit fabrication, determining appropriate materials, construction methods, and mounting solutions.
• Prepares, handles, and installs museum objects and exhibit elements using conservation aware practices in coordination with curatorial and collections staff.
• Interprets exhibit designs and construction documents, collaborating with designers, curators, registrars, and project managers to develop and implement installation strategies.
• Oversees the movement, packing, and storage of exhibit materials and objects; provides technical guidance for packing and crating for internal transfers or external loans.
• Coordinates with facilities, security, and external vendors to support exhibit installation schedules, lighting adjustments, and gallery preparation.
• Maintains tools, equipment, and workspaces; ensures safe work practices and compliance with museum and university policies.
• Directs and oversees the work of interns, volunteers, student assistants, and OPS staff engaged in exhibit preparation activities, providing training, task assignment, and quality oversight.
• Develops and maintains documentation related to exhibit fabrication, installation procedures, and materials used to support future maintenance and reinstallations.
• Provides technical expertise and independent problem solving during exhibit development and installation, making decisions within established project goals and museum standards.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree and two years’ relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Relevant experience in exhibit fabrication, installation, museum preparation, or a related technical field required.

Supervision
This position does have supervisory responsibility.
Provides ongoing work direction, training, and project-based supervision to interns, volunteers, student assistants, and OPS staff.
Provides functional supervision and coordination of the Facilities & Exhibit Coordinator related to exhibit planning, preparation, installation, and deinstallation activities.
