High Voltage Technician III
Summary
Maintain and repair components of high voltage (4,160 to 22,900 volts (V) alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC)) electrical distribution systems and associated low voltage (120V to 600V) equipment. Construct, install, operate, maintain, repair, modify, inspect, and manage electrical equipment, metering equipment, public lighting, power distribution systems, and other systems applicable to electrical overhead and underground distribution systems. Work with high voltage plants, substations (48VDC and 120VDC control circuits for relay tripping and auto shutdown), vaults, manholes, generators, switchgear, transformers, relays and other equipment and fixtures (campus outdoor lighting system, including streetlights, parking lot lights, exterior building lights and traffic signals). Splice and terminates primary and secondary cables. Install and pull slack out of primary and secondary wires. Build transformer banks and transformer platforms. Connect, disconnect, and replace service loops. Place and replace underground conductors. Inspect and locate troubles in transformers and electrical disturbance apparatus, and replace fuses and other defective parts. Inspect contracted electrical construction work. Places cross arms and string wires. Set transformers and underground pedestals. Respond to electric system trouble calls. Keep the crew truck stocked with necessary parts and materials.

- Maintain, alter, and repair existing wiring and electrical circuits
- Install conduit for electrical systems
- Pull cable for primary systems installations, splices, and terminations
- Pull slack from and repair primary and secondary overhead and underground distribution facilities
- Build transformer banks and transformer platforms
- Assist in constructing and installing system components, equipment, and fixtures
- Develop switching orders for high voltage feeders in manholes, electrical vaults, substations, and on poles for medium voltage systems to maintain system balance, repair, and add to electrical systems while maintaining power to buildings
- Perform switching orders, breaker operations, and conduit pulling
- Connect, disconnect, and replace service loops
- Work on energized lines requiring use of aerial devices, hot line tools, and insulated gloves
- Maintain fixtures and perform lighting preventive maintenance inspections (PMI) (on campus outdoor lighting system including streetlights, parking lot lights, exterior building lights, and traffic signals)
- Perform manhole PMI and pump out manholes, infrared terminations, and splices for switches
- Perform routine preventive maintenance and repair standard electrical distribution equipment
- Perform transformer PMI settings, gauges maintenance, infrared testing, etc.
- Perform oil sampling, gas analysis, amps recording, substation battery tests, crosswalk inspections, relay PMI, and line truck vehicle PMI
- Perform pole PMI, cross arms maintenance, ground resistance readings, and substations infrared testing
- Clean, maintain, and repair all equipment and tools used by the power distribution crew, including a 51-foot reach bucket truck, a 30-foot hoist truck, etc.
- Maintain records of routine maintenance and repairs
- Provide leadership and guidance to lower level technicians
- Troubleshoot, analyze, calibrate, and modify a variety of devices using standard test equipment
- Locate and correct power failures, short circuits lower end, and short circuits higher end
- Inspect and approve/disapprove contractors’ work
- Drive state vehicle or walk to customer/trouble location
- Begin and complete selected modules of the Power Line Worker Series (including associated hands-on training) through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and demonstrate proficiency therein
- Perform related work (as required)
Education and Experience
- High school diploma and three years of appropriate experience in high voltage electrical work; appropriate vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience
- Completion of NCCER Core, Electrical Level One, Two, and Three
Licensure and Certification
Florida Class B commercial driver license (CDL) [within 180 days of hire]
Supervision
- Will not directly supervise
- Provide non-supervisory leadership and guidance to lower level high voltage technicians
