Academic Advisor III

Summary

This position develops advising practices and policies, conducts comprehensive academic, career, and other student support services.  Acts as a mentor and trainer to other Academic Advisors. Advises students on course selection, requirements for selected areas of concentration and post-college plans to help meet their educational needs and realize their scholastic goals. Serves as a team leader and may supervise other advisors, but serves as an actual advisor the majority of the time.

  • Advises students regarding academic core and/or departmental requirements, appropriate class selection, academic policies and procedures, and campus resources.
  • Assists students with identification of long term goals and career plans. Works to position students to meet requirements for graduation while preparing them to achieve future career goals.
  • Assists college administrators in the recruitment and admissions of students.
  • Develops advising practices and policies, conducts comprehensive academic, career, and other student support services as necessary.
  • Interprets University policies, procedures, and curriculum to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Maintains student and advising records in accordance with state/federal law and university regulations.
  • Monitors student performance and resolves student issues with the implementation of academic resources and/or programs.
  • Coordinates advising programs such as peer advising, career placement, internships, or other college programs.
  • Collaborates with other campus units such as the Career Resource Center and Registrar’s office on campus referrals when appropriate.
  • Provides information and statistical analysis to college and university units such as enrollment statistics and student achievement. Analyzes data and prepares reports as appropriate.
  • Models the core values for the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Academic Advisor.
  • Serves on appropriate department, college, and or campus advisor committees.
  • Responsible for reporting incidents of sexual harassment/misconduct to the university Title IX coordinator.
  • Acts as a mentor and trainer to other Academic Advisors.

Education and Experience

Master’s degree in education, counseling, or an academic field directly related to the advisor’s area of responsibility and two years of relevant experience; or a bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, or an academic field directly related to the advisor’s area of responsibility and three years of relevant experience.
